Play 9 letter Wordle on 128ordle: find one nine-letter answer in 6 guesses. Type with your keyboard or tap the on-screen letters, then press Enter to submit.

Reading the clues

  • A guess must be an accepted nine-letter English word. British and American spellings are both accepted. Green means the right letter in the right position; yellow means the letter belongs in a different position.
  • Grey means that copy of the letter did not match. If your guess repeats a letter, another copy can still be green or yellow. Use all the rows together to work out how many copies the answer can contain.
  • Enter the exact answer to win. If you use every guess without solving it, the game reveals the answer so you can review your clues.

Why a repeated letter can be grey

In this made-up example, the answer is CHOCOLATE and the guess is BREAKFAST. BREAKFAST contains A twice, but CHOCOLATE has only one A. One A is coloured and the other is grey. A grey duplicate rules out an extra copy, not every A.

A plan for this puzzle

With one board, every clue belongs to the same answer. Keep green letters in position, move yellow letters to a different position, and remember that an answer may repeat a letter. Before using a turn, check your candidate against every earlier row, not just the latest one.

What nine letters changes

Each guess shows you nine letters, more than a third of the alphabet. Clues arrive quickly and near-identical answers are rare. The limit is your own vocabulary: finding any valid nine-letter word that uses what you know takes longer than reading the board.

Nine-letter answers are told apart by their stems. ADDICTION, AFFECTION, ATTENTION, DETENTION, INFECTION, INJECTION, INTENTION and INVENTION all end the same way, and compounds share halves: HEARTACHE, HEARTBEAT, HEARTBURN, HEARTFELT, HEARTLAND, HEARTLESS.

When the puzzle changes

A new puzzle starts each day at midnight in the UK, and everyone playing this size gets the same one. You can play free without an account. Progress is saved in this browser, and results for the 9-letter edition are kept apart from the classic five-letter game.
