How accents work

Accent marks that only change how a vowel is said are ignored, so there is never a hidden accent to guess: Spanish ÁRBOL, French ÉCOLE, Portuguese IRMÃO, Italian CITTÀ and Dutch CRÈME are all typed with plain letters.

Letters that count as separate letters of the alphabet keep their own keys, because they change the word: Spanish ñ, German ä, ö and ü, Swedish å, ä and ö, the nine Polish letters, and Turkish ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş and ü.

Where the words come from

Answers are the most common five-letter words in each language, ranked by how often they appear in film and television subtitles and checked against an open spelling dictionary. Names and rude words are removed. The lists were filtered by rules and read through, not reviewed line by line by a native speaker, so reports of odd words are welcome at [email protected].
