How to play 9 letter 16 Wordle

Back to the puzzle

Play 9 letter 16 Wordle on 128ordle: solve 16 different nine-letter answers in 21 guesses. Type one word and press Enter to send it to every unsolved board at once.

Reading the clues

  • A guess must be an accepted nine-letter English word. British and American spellings are both accepted. Green means the right letter in the right position; yellow means the letter belongs in a different position.
  • Grey means that copy of the letter did not match. If your guess repeats a letter, another copy can still be green or yellow. Use all the rows together to work out how many copies the answer can contain.
  • Each board scores the guess on its own. A grey letter on one board can be green on another. Entering an exact answer solves that board, and solved boards stop receiving guesses. Clear every board before your guesses run out to win.

Why a repeated letter can be grey

In this made-up example, the answer is CHOCOLATE and the guess is BREAKFAST. BREAKFAST contains A twice, but CHOCOLATE has only one A. One A is coloured and the other is grey. A grey duplicate rules out an extra copy, not every A.

A plan for this puzzle

Sixteen boards are difficult to keep in memory. Work from the visible clue rows: clear a certain answer, inspect what it revealed, then move on. Turn on All guesses when an older grey or yellow tile could rule out one of your candidates.

What nine letters changes

Each guess shows you nine letters, more than a third of the alphabet. Clues arrive quickly and near-identical answers are rare. The limit is your own vocabulary: finding any valid nine-letter word that uses what you know takes longer than reading the board.

Nine-letter answers are told apart by their stems. ADDICTION, AFFECTION, ATTENTION, DETENTION, INFECTION, INJECTION, INTENTION and INVENTION all end the same way, and compounds share halves: HEARTACHE, HEARTBEAT, HEARTBURN, HEARTFELT, HEARTLAND, HEARTLESS.

Know when you can afford a test word

You start with 5 spare turns: the guess limit minus the number of answers. During play, subtract unsolved boards from guesses left. A guess that solves nothing spends one spare turn; a correct answer keeps the margin.

At zero spare turns, every remaining guess must solve a board to clear the puzzle. A positive margin gives you room to test letters, but does not guarantee a win.

When the puzzle changes

A new puzzle starts each day at midnight in the UK, and everyone playing this size gets the same one. You can play free without an account. Progress is saved in this browser, and results for the 9-letter edition are kept apart from the classic five-letter game.
