Octordle is the point where scanning order starts to matter. Eight boards are manageable without heavy filtering, but it is easy to keep revisiting the same attractive patterns while overlooking a board that received almost no useful information.
Check your remaining guess budget
Suppose you have solved 4 of 8 boards in 7 guesses. You have 6 guesses left for 4 answers: 2 spare turns. A guess that solves no board reduces that margin by one; a correct answer preserves it. These are example counts, not player results or a recommended pace.
Spare turns = guesses left − unsolved boards. This assumes distinct answers, as in standard 128ordle. Having spare turns does not guarantee the clues are sufficient to win.

Octordle strategy by phase

| Endgame | Protect the budget | Octordle also gives five guesses beyond the board count, so the final two or three boards determine the run. Group similar endings such as -ATCH or -IGHT and use one discriminator when multiple boards share the same ambiguity. |
Avoid the main failure mode
Do not spend a third pure coverage word out of habit. On eight boards, an actual answer often introduces the missing letter while removing a board, which is more efficient than a word chosen only for unused letters.
Use a measurable checkpoint
By guess three, most boards should either have a strong candidate or a clearly identified missing letter family. Flag the one or two weakest boards early; they are more likely to need a deliberate test before the finish.
