How to play 4 letter Quordle

Back to the puzzle

Play 4 letter Quordle on 128ordle: solve 4 different four-letter answers in 9 guesses. Type one word and press Enter to send it to every unsolved board at once.

Reading the clues

  • A guess must be an accepted four-letter English word. British and American spellings are both accepted. Green means the right letter in the right position; yellow means the letter belongs in a different position.
  • Grey means that copy of the letter did not match. If your guess repeats a letter, another copy can still be green or yellow. Use all the rows together to work out how many copies the answer can contain.
  • Each board scores the guess on its own. A grey letter on one board can be green on another. Entering an exact answer solves that board, and solved boards stop receiving guesses. Clear every board before your guesses run out to win.

Why a repeated letter can be grey

In this made-up example, the answer is BEST and the guess is SEEN. SEEN contains E twice, but BEST has only one E. One E is coloured and the other is grey. A grey duplicate rules out an extra copy, not every E.

A plan for this puzzle

Four boards are small enough to scan after every guess. If one board is stuck between two answers, inspect the other three before taking a chance. A certain answer elsewhere may contain the letter that separates your two candidates.

What four letters changes

Each guess shows you four letters instead of five, so you learn less per turn, and short words have far more near neighbours. Most players find the 4-letter edition harder than the classic game at high board counts, even though the words themselves are simpler.

Four-letter words come in big rhyming families: BAKE, CAKE, FAKE, LAKE, MAKE, RAKE, TAKE, WAKE; or BOLD, COLD, FOLD, GOLD, HOLD, SOLD, TOLD. Three green letters can still leave six or seven answers.

Know when you can afford a test word

You start with 5 spare turns: the guess limit minus the number of answers. During play, subtract unsolved boards from guesses left. A guess that solves nothing spends one spare turn; a correct answer keeps the margin.

At zero spare turns, every remaining guess must solve a board to clear the puzzle. A positive margin gives you room to test letters, but does not guarantee a win.

When the puzzle changes

A new puzzle starts each day at midnight in the UK, and everyone playing this size gets the same one. You can play free without an account. Progress is saved in this browser, and results for the 4-letter edition are kept apart from the classic five-letter game.
